Way back in 1987 a young man by the name of C.J. Kaplan was preparing to head off to college. Before leaving, he needed to train his replacement to take over as register boy at the Waldenbooks in Needham, Massachusetts. His successor was none other than Mitch Blum.
C.J. taught Mitch the finer points of manning the front desk at a bookstore in a small New England town: carefully stacking the romance novels, ripping the covers off of remaindered books, and trading Playboys for Lime Rickeys with the guys who worked at the nearby Brigham’s.
Many years later, C.J. and Mitch were reunited when they happened upon each other in the hallway at the ad agency in Boston where they both ended up working.
Like most ad folks, C.J. and Mitch have a rich history of side jobs and freelance projects. Both are gifted voice-over actors (at least according to their mothers). C.J. won two New England Emmy Awards for his writing work on the Red Sox TV show Sox Appeal. Mitch is also the co-host of the popular Steve Gorman Sports podcast. Neither distinction has made them rich and/or famous.
Both are still recovering from the upbringing that is so lovingly described in this very book.
